01 — Care

How to wash your jeans

Always follow the care line on the product page. The steps below match the most common Dear John denim labels—cold gentle wash, no bleach—and note where drying and ironing instructions differ by style.

  1. 01Turn inside out

Protect the face of the denim and reduce abrasion on seams, hardware, and whiskers.

  2. 02Wash cold on gentle

Cold water and a gentle cycle are the standard on most Dear John denim care labels.

  3. 03Skip bleach

Care labels consistently say do not bleach — bleach weakens cotton and strips color unevenly.

  4. 04Dry per the label

Most packs allow tumble dry low; others require line dry, hang dry, or dry flat, or say do not tumble dry. Use exactly what the product care line lists.

  5. 05Iron only when the label allows

Many labels allow a warm iron when needed; some say do not iron. Prefer the reverse side when you do press.

  6. 06Wash before wear when directed

When the care line says wash before wear, do that first cycle before regular rotation.

02 — Longevity

Wash less, wear more

Denim does not need a wash after every wear. Spot-clean when you can, air garments between wears, and wait until they truly need refreshing. Fewer washes protect color depth and keep stretch blends recovering longer.

Separate dark washes from lights. Wash with similar colors inside out. Avoid fabric softener—it can leave residue on denser cotton and soften performance fibers unevenly.

Store hanging or folded flat. Long hangs on thin hangers can point shoulders or stretch a soft waistband over time—rotate how you store favorites.

03 — Fabric

Rigid vs stretch

Different hands need the same care principles—with a few differences in how they break in and recover.

Rigid & non-stretch

Feels firmer at first try-on, then molds with wear. Prefer cold washes and the drying method on your label so creases and character develop cleanly.

Stretch

Soft give on day one with recovery after sitting. Over-heat and over-washing age elastane faster—keep cycles gentle and dry exactly as the care label directs (often tumble low; sometimes line dry only).
