How to Care for Premium Denim So It Lasts for Years

By Dear John Denim Style Team

The right wash, dry, and storage routine keeps your Dear John Denim jeans looking perfect longer. Here's exactly what to do.

Premium denim is an investment in yarn quality, dye depth, and construction. Washing and drying it the way you wash gym clothes will fade indigo unevenly, break down stretch fibers, and shorten the life of the fit you paid for. Here is the routine we recommend.

How often to wash

Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth, air out between wears, and run a full wash only when odor or visible dirt demands it. Many denim people go twenty to forty wears on dark indigo before the first wash β€” not for β€œrules,” but because indigo develops character with fewer cycles.

The wash routine that preserves color and stretch

  1. Turn jeans inside out and zip or button them closed β€” this reduces abrasion on the face of the fabric.
  2. Cold water, gentle cycle, mild liquid detergent. Powders can leave undissolved grit in creases.
  3. Wash with like colors only; indigo crocking (dye transfer) is real on the first few washes.
  4. Skip fabric softener on stretch denim β€” it coats fibers and can reduce recovery.

Drying: skip the dryer

Heat is the enemy of elastane and of dark dyes. Tumble drying causes shrinkage along the length, white streaking on creases, and premature breakdown of stretch. Shake out the pair, reshape the waistband and legs, and hang or lay flat to dry away from direct sun.

Storage and travel

Fold stacked in a drawer or hang from the waistband on a non-slip hanger. Avoid storing damp denim in plastic bins β€” mildew risk β€” and avoid tight clip hangers that dent delicate washes.

Refresh between washes

Steam to relax seat wrinkles after travel, hang overnight in fresh air, or use a garment spray formulated for clothing (not household cleaner). For small odors, sun and air often work; freezing is optional internet lore β€” if you try it, seal the jeans in a clean bag first.

Build a rotation so each pair lasts

Rotating two or three favorites means fewer stress cycles per pair and less seat shine from sitting in the same jeans every single day. Anchor your closet with dependable washes from Core, then add seasonal statements from New Arrivals and the full Shop All Denim assortment.

What to avoid

Bleach (unless you truly intend to distress), hot water, dryer sheets on technical stretch, and washing after every light wear unless necessary. If you adopt one habit from this article, make it cold wash + air dry β€” your jeans, your time, and your water bill all benefit.
